Founded in 2018, Shematic has developed a unique know-how in designing electric powertrain systems for the Light Electric Vehicles (LEV) market. Thanks to the Tech Seed loan from the Foundation for Technological Innovation (FIT), the startup aims to improve its current electric powertrain technology.

In recent years, electric vehicles have become the new race for clean mobility and represent a significant step in moving closer to carbon reduction. However, as for every technology, electric vehicles face the challenge of constant innovation. Nowadays, light electric vehicles such as last-mile delivery vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, and small-sized cars face efficiency and performance challenges in their day-to-day activities.

More and more companies adopt electric alternatives to reduce their carbon impact and costs. The most common example lies in last-mile delivery companies bringing a product from a transportation hub to its final destination – the client. However, the lack of power, efficiency, and range diminish their ability to accept all business opportunities and fulfil their daily tasks. As a result, these companies face higher operational costs and reduce their productivity, implying a business loss.

Shematic has developed a unique know-how in designing electric powertrain systems for the light electric vehicles market to overcome these challenges. The all-in-one powertrain solution focuses on three aspects: electric motors with a high-power density optimised for low or high-speed vehicles, battery packs tailored for any vehicle adaptation, and a smart battery management system to collect the correct data and optimise the battery. Combined, these three characteristics make Shematic’s electric powertrain system one of the highest-performing solutions on the market. It provides up to 95% efficiency on a larger spectrum of electric vehicles and ultimately up to twice more range. In addition, the smart battery analysis system developed by Shematic, can increase the battery lifespan by up to 700%, making it a considerable asset in the electric vehicle battery market.

The complimentary team of engineers from EPFL, HES-SO, and Centrale Lyon and the business members have long experience in the automotive, rail, ICT and IoT sectors. The startup is currently conducting a CHF 800’000 seed round that will be closed by Spring 2022.

Developing the next generation of EV powertrains

The next step for Shematic is to finalise the development of a new generation of high-power density electric motor, called FREA, to improve the onboard power and range of light electric vehicles. It will enable Shematic to stand among the leaders in transport goods through Swiss cities without problems of autonomy and productivity. The FIT Tech Seed loan obtained by Shematic, along with financial support from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, will finance the current electric powertrain technology.
