Zurich-based Sevensense, providing AI and 3D Vision technology for autonomous mobile robotics, has completed its Series A investment, raising US$7.7M led by ABB Technology Ventures. Besides the investment, the two companies entered a strategic partnership to integrate Sevensense AI and navigation technology will enable future autonomous mobile robots.

After winning a technology challenge organized by ABB Robotics to identify the most advanced navigation solution in the world. Sevensense Robotics won a strategic partnership with ABB, the leading robot manufacturer, to bring a new generation of autonomous mobile robots (AMR) to the shopfloor. ABB will integrate Sevensense’s AI and mapping technology into its AMR portfolio, enabling its mobile robots to navigate in dynamic environments safely.

Sami Atiya, President of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation, said, "Integrating Sevensense’s AI and 3D mapping technology with our AMR offering will help accelerate the replacement of today’s linear production lines with fully flexible networks. Our vision of the future workplace is one in which AMRs move materials, parts and finished products between smart workstations in increasingly unstructured, dynamic work environments, and our partnership with Sevensense is an important step in realizing that vision.”

The partnership includes a minority investment in Sevensense through ABB’s venture capital unit, ABB Technology Ventures, which is expected to close by the end of November 2021. The fresh capital will enable Sevensense to scale its production capabilities and develop new business opportunities globally.

“We have demonstrated that our technology is mature and ready to be deployed at scale in industrial settings. Today we set a fundamental milestone on the path that leads Sevensense closer to achieving its vision: enabling mobile robots to be operated everywhere, by anyone!” states Gregory Hitz, CEO of Sevensense Robotics.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile robotics has emerged as a key factor for the industrial world to ensure operational resilience and balance the labour shortage phenomenon while guaranteeing high-quality execution. Sevensense’s AI and 3D Vision technology not only fulfils what the industry demands but can radically revolutionize what is possible today: spanning from enabling flexible production to assisting picking processes in highly dynamic warehouses.

The Sevensense navigation technology uses advanced computer vision and AI algorithms to create a 3D map that is more accurate than today’s 2D solutions, leading to superior navigation capabilities and more cost-effective solutions than laser scanner-based navigation. An AMR equipped with 3D Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) technology will be able to interpret its environment accurately, identify a person, a pallet or another robot and autonomously make decisions to navigate around these obstacles. This level of intelligence will enable safer human-machine interactions and ensure material flows around factories and warehouses are safe and efficient for maximum flexibility and productivity.

Sevensense serves several medium-size and large manufacturers of industrial vehicles in the manufacturing, logistics, and professional cleaning sectors. Founded in 2018 as a spin-off from ETH Zurich, the startup received early support from Wyss Zurich and ETHZ Foundation and currently employs 25 people.
