L.E.S.S. – Light Efficient SystemS – has developed a nano-fiber-technology for LCD which strongly reduces energy consumption. The company has won CHF130’000 at the venture kick competition.

L.E.S.S. was already awarded several prizes, such as the “Trophee PERL” from Lausanne Region or the KPMG Inspiration Grant. Now the start-up from Lausanne also won the third phase of venture kick.

Ultra-thin notebooks and tablets are already the name of the game in the context of mobile work. However, their high rates of energy consumption, of which the major part is traced back to the displays, remains problematic. As is well known, the result is that after some time, the batteries simply die. Lausanne's L.E.S.S., wants to develop the next generation of LCD displays thanks to their revolutionary backlighting system, which with only one fibre can replace up to 100 LEDs. This leads to a significant reduction in energy consumption, which also contributes to higher device performances.

A first prototype equipped with a 7-inch screen has just been completed, and L.E.S.S. plans to incorporate the technology into tablets and notebooks prior to 2015. The giants in the electronics and energy industries have already expressed their interest. Founder and CEO, Dr. Yann Tissot: „In this business you have to be extremely fast. Because of this, we needed as much money as possible, as fast as possible, in order to be able to stay in the game. From the beginning on, venture kick trusted us even though at that time, we weren't able to produce a lot of results. As a team, the only thing that we can say is thank you! “
