Through its artificial tree ‘Arb’, SoHHytec produces hydrogen, electricity and heat directly on-site using only water and sunlight. The newly obtained FIT funds will enable the startup to accelerate the development of its product. The first pilot system is under completion at the EPFL Lausanne campus.

SoHHytec was incorporated in 2020 by Saurabh Tembhurne (CEO), Sophia Haussener (Co-founder and scientific advisor) and Meng Lin with the support of its team member Daniel Brandenburger (business consultant). The startup, through its new approach for energy production using hydrogen, is introducing a sustainable alternative to the conventional highly polluting fossil fuels. However, hydrogen, in its current use, raises several issues since about 96% of the world’s hydrogen comes from centralised installations, requiring major logistical infrastructures to move the resource to the requesting countries. Moreover, hydrogen is mainly produced from fossil sources and CO2-emitting processes.

The “Arb” artificial tree developed by SoHHytec is emerging as one of the solutions to this problem. It is based on SoHHytec’s patented ‘integrated photo-electrochemical’ device, and it utilises the company’s patent-pending system controller for cost-effective and cleaner-greener fuel and power production.

While the first pilot project continues at the EPFL Lausanne Campus, the startup will use the obtained CHF 100’000 Tech Seed loan to set up long-term validation and automation tests, develop the pilot product (hardware and software), and acquire customers and partners.

Besides the support of FIT, the startup has impressed numerous juries winning itself several accolades such as Nanshan Entrepreneurship Start Contest prize, the place of Finalist in the AIT camp of Venture Lab, and first place in the Buhler Energy Challenge 2015. It has also received support from organisations such as Venture Kick, BRIDGE PoC and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy for the R&D part and support from the European Space Agency.
