An increasing number of startup challenge programs are opening their doors to startups from all over the world. Swiss startups have discovered and participated in them and won prizes for the first position. This overview presents some of the Swiss startups that have recently brought home global prizes.
Competing for a prize in a global setting with hundreds of startup companies from all over the world can be challenging, however, Swiss startups have repeatedly proven that their solutions are more outstanding. The following startups have won prizes in different countries.
Munich, Germany: eMove360°, Materialica Award
Tide Ocean, which has just incorporated this October, received the 17. Materialica Design Award during the electromobility exhibition eMove 360 in Munich, Germany. The startup is developing a solution that allows for repair and transformation of damaged plastic (upcycling) into high-quality granules and yarns. Already, 30 tons of ocean plastic has been processed in the first couple of months, at the highest quality.
Paris, Airport Startup Day
Technis won the 1st place at the Airport startup day organized by the Groupe ADP in Paris. The award recognizes startups with innovative products and solutions that transform the transportation and aviation sectors. Challenging 17 contestants, Technis was awarded for its smart flooring product Technis Counting that is designed to optimize passenger’s mobility and help airports security operators in their daily job. As part of the award, the startup will receive a Las Vegas' package for two with the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) entrance.
Frankfurt am Main, Germany: Formnext 2019 Start-up Challenge
Spectroplast is the winner of the Formnext startup challenge, which recognizes innovative early-stage companies that are revolutionizing the additive manufacturing (AM) market. The Zurich based ETH spinoff developed an extremely precise silicone 3D printing technology. As part of the prize, the Spectroplat received a free and fully equipped booth at the Formnext conference in addition to other services that will contribute to their future development.
Thales Alenia Space, Supplier Award
SWISSto12, provider of telecommunications components for the satellite and aerospace industries won the 2019 Supplier Award of Excellence from Thales Alenia Space in recognition for their performance. Thales Alenia is the leading aerospace company that delivers cost-effective solutions for telecommunications for a wide range of industries and has been collaborating with Swissto12 since 2018.
USA, Create the Future Design Contest
The foldable drone, a morphing quadrotor that can squeeze and fly designed by Davide Falanga, Kevin Kleber, Stefano Mintchev, Dario Floreano, and Davide Scaramuzza and the University of Zurich, won the Create the Future Design Contest 2019 in the category Aerospace and Defence. The foldable drone has a novel, simpler, yet effective morphing design for quadrotors consisting of a frame with four independently rotating arms that fold around the mainframe.
Boston, US: BioBusiness-MIT Alumni Life Science Angels award
Eracal Therapeutics, developer of a new specific appetite suppressant that is more effective than previous drugs was recently received the BioBusiness-MIT Alumni Life Science Angels award for their business idea, as part of the "BioBusiness" continuing education program at the Università della Svizzera italiana. The two founders Josua Jordi and Simon Breitler travelled to Boston to present their business idea to the American audience.
