Mosan Toilet

Swiss Bluetec Bridge Swiss water and sanitation businesses as well as social entrepreneurs with cash, know-how and access to a network of professionals. The selection committee has now decided to support MoSan, a start-up that has developed a portable dry toilet for private in-home use, and WATA Enterprise, a new company planning to deploy a range of devices that autonomously produce chlorine.

The goal of Swiss Bluetec Bridge is to mprove access to water and sanitation for at least 200,000 low income customers in developing and emerging markets by providing them with advanced Swiss technology and innovation. If a business idea is selected, the company will receive an interest-free loan of max. 250,000 Swiss francs towards the operational costs. Swiss Bluetec Bridge also provides technical, managerial and business support during the development of a social enterprise. And entrepreneurs will get access to a network of professionals and investors in the field.

Recently the selection committee decided to support two new companies:

MoSan developed a portable dry toilet for private in-home use (see picture above). The light-weight toilet is prefabricated, optimized for stacking, shipping and transport. Feces and urine are separated into removable containers, which allows easy and convenient collection and transport in areas with poor infrastructure.

The toilet is at the center of a sanitation service that includes training for users, health promotion, collection of excreta and maintenance. The service is market-based and offers job opportunities for the local community. There are a variety of treatment and reuse opportunities, including composting, anaerobic digestion, or the production of fuel-briquettes.

A future spin-off of the Antenna Foundation, WATA Enterprise will deploy a range of devices that autonomously produce chlorine through an electrolysis process. These portable machines are particularly suitable for remote areas.

WATA Enterprise will focus first on Burkina Faso and Zambia, where access to safe water is of major concern, in healthcare centers in particular. In these countries, chlorine is the most accepted and cost-efficient water treatment solution. Yet, many hospitals in rural areas are regularly facing chlorine shortages. MOreover, when these products reach these areas, they are of unreliable quality.

With its portable devices, the company will offer to its clients (Ministries of health, water entrepreneurs) on site production capacity. WATA devices are easy to operate as they only require salt, water and a source of energy.
