Smart Home Technology, a Zurich based startup offering hardware and software solutions for process and fleet optimisation based on IoT technologies, was awarded the UBS Award for social innovation at the seif Award ceremony. UBS will support the start up in further developing their products. Swiss Blue energy also won the public vote.

Designed to recognise entrepreneurs and their innovations dedicated to providing solutions for the world’s most pressing societal and environmental problems through innovative and entrepreneurial ideas, the Seif Awards for social entrepreneurship was held yesterday at the Volkshaus in Zurich. More than 200 guests gathered to celebrate the victory of the five winners of the 2017 seif Awards.

Out of 200 applications the selection jury identified 10 startups were invited to pitch before the Audience. After presenting their pitches, the public was given the opportunity to vote their favourite startup through RaiseNow’s realtime fundraising system, and the winner was Swiss Blue Energy. The startup is developing a Thermo-Magnetic Motor as an alternative to energy storage infrastructure. The event proceeded with the announcement of the winners of the five award categories. The Jury for each category presented the awards to each respective winners.

From Switzerland Smart Home Technology (SHT) was bestowed with the UBS award for social innovation entrepreneurial innovation. SHT is a Zurich based startup, established as a spinoff of ETH. The startup developed their core product the IoT Concentrator, a full industrial IoT (Internet of Things) solution that supports small and mid-sized companies to bring offline products to an online world and for better process and fleet optimisation. The industrial IoT solution allows for data collection, analysis and visualisation. The startup works directly with companies and supports them in identifying their IoT models before doing mass production processes land roll outs with customers. The product was developed in partnership with big corporates including Swisscom and Microsoft.

“I am honoured to have won this award. We will use the funds to make new concentrators for different purposes, expand our customer base in the coming years and solidifying our customer base”. Said Felix Adamczyk, CEO of SHT. During the event the startup was approached by Neo Green Energy who showed interest in using the concentrator. Smart Home Technology meet with them in the coming days to discuss possibilities of a proof of Concept.

The jury’s decision to award SHT was based on three key points: UBS is focusing on startups based in Switzerland. Thus, the startup was a better fit that UBS was looking for. In depth discussions and in person meeting are vital to fully understand the company’s challenges. The jury is convinced that SHT’s local approach will help them to develop tailor made products catering exactly to client’s needs. It also allows SHT, given that it is an ETH spinoff, the opportunity to use their knowledge of the Swiss market. The second factor was due to their client base. SHT is concentrating on small and medium sized companies who often have no IoT background. They will benefit from SHT’s concentrator which includes both hardware and software solutions. And lastly, due to the environmental impact that can be achieved with the IOT concentrator. In a pilot project with a Swiss manufacturer, the manufacturer saved up to 2 million in costs and was able to reduce the number of unnecessary drives resulting in 1400t of Co2 less, in just one year.

The winners of the four other award categories include:
MyAbility from Vienna (Suva award for integration and prevention); Blitab from Vienna (PWC award for future trends); Coolar from Berlin (Seif award for social entrepreneurship) and Mirrorable from Italy received the first Johnson and Johnson award for digital healthcare.
