La Prairie, a leader in the luxury cosmetics industry, is the first company to acquire Microcaps EOS 1000, an industry-first biotech instrument enabling continuous, precision production and size-controlled microcapsules at scale. It will use the technology for a new product line planned to launch later this year.

Microcaps developed a patented technology that enables the size control of microcapsules, allowing drugs to be released in the affected part of the body at a specific rate, which until today is a major challenge. With Swiss precision, the ETH spinoff founded in 2019 ensures the microcapsules behave exactly the same, allowing for tailoring and predicting the release profile of a drug.

The company’s device EOS 1000 series is a first-of-its-kind solution enabling the continuous encapsulation of active ingredients, with a throughput of 5 grams per hour by a factor of 1000 per device. At its core, it consists of multiple identical microchannels, each capable of funnelling more than 100,000 microcapsules of an identical shape and size, thus ensuring high-quality standards. Based on Microcaps’ patented Oliocaps formulation, the EOS 1000 facilitates the fusion of oil-based substances into aqueous solutions for various applications. “Flavors, fragrances, vitamins, and other active ingredients found in food or cosmetic applications can be integrated into our Oliocaps,” says Alessandro Ofner, cofounder of Microcaps.

La Prairie, a leading player in luxury skincare, present in 70 countries and with over 1500 employees worldwide, has acquired Microcaps EOS 1000, making them the first company to use the Microcaps technology. The Zurich-based company will use the technology to add an essential ingredient in the microcapsules of its newly developed skincare product line anticipated to launch in summer 2022.

“Made in Switzerland. Microcaps worked with our team to develop a skincare product that exhibits an exquisite, harmonic beauty by releasing encapsulated ingredients when applied to the skin,” explains Judith Fiedler, head of development at La Prairie.
