Vaud based Mootral is about to start trialling its feed supplement in New Zealand, as part of efforts by its agriculture sector to meet methane emission reduction targets. The Swiss agtech has developed a solution that reduces methane emissions from cows up to 38% and is now open for business.

Global livestock industry is responsible for 15% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with no signs of slowing. As the number of ruminants is forecasted to grow from 1.5 to 2.5 billion worldwide by 2050, the Swiss agtech is set the save the world, one cow at a time. To achieve this, Mootral has developed a natural feed supplement made of garlic and citrus extracts that reduces methane emissions from cows up to 38%.

Recently the agtech launched by Thomas Hafner set up a series of trials starting in the second quarter of 2021 in New Zealand. In a move to provide its solution to the farmers of the country and start the transition to climate-smart agriculture, Mootral aims to collect data with local breeds and feeding regime, measure methane reduction in settings.

Speaking about the business milestones achieved, Isabelle Boticelli, Mootral’s Chief Operations Officer explains to Startupticker.ch: “We are starting feeding commercially in Q2.21. We created our carbon methodology approved by VERRA at the end of 2019 and issued our first carbon credits at the end of 2020. We are open for business now after several years of work.”

The Swiss startup’s ambition is to establish climate friendly products (meat and dairy) as a logical standard given the opportunity for positive impact on the environment. Mootral is based in Rolle Vaud, with 5 decision makers and has subsidiaries in key locations in the world for R&D, production and commercialization.
