KITRO product & Dashboard

Regardless of the pandemic and the global lockdown, the food-tech startup Kitro had made remarkable progress with its automated food waste management system. With over 100 devices already signed at 40 locations in Europe, the company is launching a new trial in Australia.

In its fight against food waste, KITRO developed an automated food waste measurement system to enable restaurants and hotels to identify, track and monitor food waste. The system comprises a device that fits onto existing trash cans to automatically measure and track the amount of food tossed into them. A personalised analytics dashboard empowers users to make informed decisions, set goals, and optimise work practices to reduce food waste, food cost, and environmental impact.

Currently, the company has signed 100 devices used by customers at 40 different locations in Switzerland and anticipates triple these numbers by the end of the year. The company’s largest customer is the EPFL Campus, which deployed 30 KITRO devices across the entire campus as part of its sustainable development transformation.

Building on its success in Switzerland, the startup is planning to expand into Germany, Austria and France by the end of this year, granted that operations in these locations reopen. The startup is currently raising a financing round to scale and enable the execution of its expansion strategy.

The pandemic has not left KITRO unaffected. Nonetheless, there have been considerable developments. Besides growing the team, the company could win new partnerships and improve the product from a hardware and software standpoint.

“We have expanded our target market to work more with hospitals and medical centres. Despite the impact of covid, especially on our focus industry, we could make a lot of advancement. We have also observed and are pleased that there is a greater demand for solutions to aid resource management, save costs and ensure sustainable development”, says Naomi Mackenzie, Co-founder of KITRO.

Kitro wins new partner in Australia
Beyond Europe, KITRO is also eyeing Australia. The startup launched a collaboration with a partnership waste disposal company Ecoguardians, which contacted them in search of a food waste mitigation solution after the Australian government deployed grants for food waste mitigation. KITRO and Ecoguardians will engage in a trial at different properties to understand the feasibility of entering the market through a close partnership with local players.
