LEDCity claims to have developed the world’s most energy-efficient lighting system with average energy savings of 90 percent. In 2021 the cleantech start-up doubled revenues to more than $3 million and opened offices in Germany and Spain. The start-up plans to expand globally.

Motion detectors are a half-century-old invention, which are expensive and complex to install. Due to the central control, they can also control the light only very sluggishly. LEDCity’s decentralized, sensor-controlled and AI-optimized lighting system can solve this problem, saving 50-70 percent more energy than modern LED systems. Thanks to up to five integrated sensors and a small computer per light source, the light source can decide precisely when and how much light is needed in addition to natural light. At the same time, it aims to optimize building operations by evaluating data from thousands of sensors.

The start-up, founded in 2017, entered the scale-up phase a year ago after closing a financing round of CHF2 million. In 2021 LEDCity increased revenues by almost 100 percent to more than three million dollars. Today the company has 370 customers and 30 employees.

The growth will not stop there. The global LED lighting market is expected to be valued at 90 billion dollars by 2023 and increases annually by eight percent. In companies alone, around 30-40 percent of electricity consumption is attributable to lighting. These costs can be significantly reduced by this sensor-controlled lighting system.

LEDCity has already opened offices in Germany and Spain and hired the first employees there. Nevertheless, LEDCity wants to go even further and expand all over the world. For this purpose, the startup is looking to raise capital in the two-digit million range to continue its expansion and optimize the technology of its lighting system.
