In a strategic milestone, Xsensio announced the first deployments of its Lab-On-SkinTM patches at MotionLab, a well renowned Swiss training center for top athletes. Both partners are set to unlock new insights for competing in extreme heat and humidity conditions.

Xsensio is on the fast track. The EPFL Innovation Park based startup performed in May a pilot test deployment of its first Lab-on-SkinTM product at MotionLab, explains Hoël Guérin, CTO at Xsensio. This smart wearable skin patch and mobile app dynamically monitor electrolyte in sweat for the management of heat acclimation and dehydration of athletes, enabling better performance and reduced risk of injury in hot or humid environment such as the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

This is a key milestone for the startup led by Esmeralda Megally. As a B2B company, Xsensio intends to enter into a business agreement with Sport OEMs and plans pilot commercialization of this sport Lab-on-SkinTM product in 2022 focusing on elite and professional athletes first, and expanding to amateur sport then.

Enabling Top Athlete Performance

As Xsensio’s CTO Hoël Guérin further explains to Startupticker.ch, this deployment was the first step of a strategic collaboration with MotionLab, a renowned sport performance center training top athletes. “They have an in-depth scientific knowledge about sport physiology to support this technological innovation. Together, both companies will validate the Lab-on-SkinTM sensor in a clinical study with a cohort of athletes at the end of this year.”

Besides their scientific insight, MotionLab is working daily with top athletes providing state-of-the-art services to prepare themselves for big competitions like the upcoming Olympic Games or World Cups. Based close to Lausanne, MotionLab has an extensive understanding of the athletes’ needs and is already providing them with services for heat acclimatation, brought to the next level with the novel capabilities of the Lab-on-SkinTM.

Speaking of Xsensio's sensing platform, Matthieu Sailly, Sport Medicine M.D. at MotionLab says: “Sports scientists have been dreaming of this kind of continuous data. With Xsensio’s technology, they are bringing the missing piece. I can easily tell elite teams that the technology will allow them to considerably push them in their training, and that is very valuable.”

On the growth path

This is a busy time for the Vaud startup with many fast developing market opportunities on tap. The team led by Esmeralda Megally is working hard to optimize the processes to make them compatible with larger scale production so it can meet strong demand for its solution. And to push the boundaries of what is possible to track in real-time on such a small footprint patch.

Xsensio is currently fundraising for its seed round to support the commercialization of its first product and expand its technologies to new market applications in consumer health and medical applications. Esmeralda Megally further explains: “We have a big part of the round committed so far by existing investors and new ones. The European Innovation Council has also chosen to invest Euro 4M in our company over the next two years, through the EIC Accelerator, which targets high risk, high potential European startups.”
