The introduction of the Sequent supercharger marked the world’s first kinetic self-charging smartwatch. With more than 10’000 units sold, the company will be launching a collection with funds from Kickstarter backers, who have contributed over CHF 670’000 (+3000%) to the project.

Today’s smartwatches become obsolete when the battery runs out, a problem to which almost no solution existed until Basel based startup Sequent AG emerged in 2016 and revolutionised the market, combining the traditional Swiss watchmaking tradition with cutting edge technology to promote health and sustainability.

Founded by Adrian Buchmann (CEO) and Harry Guhl (executive chairman), Sequent designs and commercialises sustainable mechanical smartwatches – the ‘Sequent SuperCharger’ – suitable for the 21st century. The watches leverage a unique and cutting-edge technology that transforms kinetic energy into electrical energy to provide an autonomous and infinite battery life. Aside from infinite power with a standby time of more than two years, the smartwatch comes with biofeedback tracking, a heart rate sensor, a step counter, an accelerometer, and built-in GPS and notification functions, delivered through the Sequent App.

The company has sold over 10’000 watches, of which 4000 were sold in 2020 to customers in the US, UK, France, Switzerland, Germany, Czech Republic and Japan and Singapore.“We are aiming for 15’000 units this year; the challenge for us, however, is having enough components to deliver all,” says Buchmann.

Through its ongoing Kickstarter campaign, Sequent is raising funds for the next series of watches. The new SEQUENT Elektron line is equipped with solar-powered indices that glow in low light for visibility, patented autonomous micromechanical movement technology and a new Oxygen app available on both Android and Apple devices. The watches boast precise timekeeping of ±0.3 seconds a day (±0.17 seconds more accurate than mechanical watches) and are water-resistant up to 50 meters. Like its previous products, the company uses no screws, gears, or batteries, promoting sustainability and increasing product life-cycle and recyclability.

More than 630k via Kickstarter
The campaign has already surpassed its target goal of CHF 22.000. So far, backers have contributed more than CHF 670’000 (3077%), making it another successfully funded Sequent crowdfunding initiative; the previous campaign brought CHF 1.043.330 in 2017 and CHF 517.225 in 2019. With eight days remaining before the campaign closes, Sequents CEO hopes to reach USD 1 million. The company will use the funds to finalise its new watch series production to prepare for the first shipping in November.

A Sturdy Track Record
In Addition to the successful Kickstarter campaigns, Sequent has raised over CHF 5 million as part of its seed and pre-series A rounds and is a two-time winner of the Red Dot design award. The startup also recorded great success after early adopters in the automatic smartwatch community made pre-orders of over CHF 1 million. With the establishment of Sequent Lab, R&D department in Taipei, Taiwan, the startup and its team of 23 employees are now ready to take the lead in the automatic smartwatch market.
