Velohub, a Zurich based startup striving to improve bikers’ safety on the road through the development of smart bike lights that indicate direction and improve visibility, has attracted a lot of media attention. The start-up has already closed partnership.

Velohub, also known by its brand name Blinkers, is developing smart technology for urban cyclists. The startup is currently working on the first product: Blinkers, a set of lights that that increases bikers’ security. The lights enable car drivers and pedestrians to see bikers on the street and understand their traffic communication such as indicating change of directions or breaking. The Blinkers can be used in every situation and at every angle on the street.

Blinkers deliver a comprehensive set of functionalities, including smart lights with a light sensor which measures the ambient brightness, a breaking light, a control pad which is attached to the handlebar and works as an ergonomic remote turning indicators, rechargeable batteries and a laser safety perimeter inform of laser beams, which are projected to the ground, demarcating the required distance between the cars and the bicycle especially under poor light conditions, hence, creating a safety perimeter around the bicycle.

Media draws attention to the Smart lights
With this idea the startup has gained ample attention from the media including Süddeutsche Zeitung, Gizmag, Computer Bild, Cnn expansion and 14 others. All these are enthused over the idea. Publications such as Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote that: “The technology is a comprehensive security system for bikers that should be further advanced.” Also Core77 commeted: “Velohub's rechargeable Blinkers are a turn in the right direction."

Mutual interest to improve safety brings new partners on board
Technical Safety Gear (TSG), with its headquarters in Zurich, offers a wide variety of helmets and protective gear for skate, bike, bmx, snowboard, ski and wakeboard to enhance safety. The company has entered into partnership with Blinkers.

“The partnership with TSG was established because they believe that our product ,Blinkers, is as a suitable complementary product for their urban helmets. There is a clear match in the design and common need for safety between Blinkers and one of their helmets, which incorporates a rear LED in the back. At the moment, we are exploring different synergies, especially in manufacturing, as a start of potential joint projects in the future”, says Javier Fernandez de Alegria manager of Blinkers.

Blinkers seeks funds through crowdfunding
Since May 24, the startup has been running a campaign on Kickstarter to gather 50’000 Euros for the further development of their product. The campaign will be closing on June 23.
