Closed Chinese doors

Venture leaders China, a program that brings hightech startups to China to discover business opportunities and learn about the Chinese market, is looking for startups for the 2016 program. Thomas Fessard from SpiroChem was part of the 2015 cohort. In an interview with venturelab he talked about his experience and why he recommends startups to participate.

In 2015, Thomas Fessard, CEO of SpiroChem, a startup developing tailor-made molecules to help pharmaceutical companies design the drugs of tomorrow, was part of the Venture leaders China program. In an interview with venturelab, Thomas Fessard said that he was able to understand the risks and the potential of the Chinese market for his venture; but most importantly, he was able to meet with potential Chinese partners.

In discussions with Chinese experts, Thomas learned about the various opportunities of doing business in China and also about the threats involved. “Being familiarized with the Chinese way of doing business as well as the local customs and traditions or “Guanxi” is important before entering a negotiation” comments the CEO of SpiroChem.

Most importantly, Thomas established connections with Chinese suppliers who will provide his company with raw materials for their activities. This will enable his company to strengthen its supply chain necessary and will foster manufacturing of high-value-added products and corresponding services in Switzerland.

Thomas recommends the program to all startups because it not only helps them explore business opportunities in China, but also enables them to grow as individual. Furthermore the trip opens several doors and business opportunities for startups.
