208 contestants in the Swisscom StartupChallenge 2016

Swisscom is offering the best start-ups the opportunity to visit Silicon Valley for a week-long business development trip. Out of the 208 contesting candidates ten will be invited convince the jury with a pitch. Only 5 start-ups can win the challenge and the one-week trip to Silicon Valley.

For the fourth time, Swisscom is running the Swisscom StartupChallenge to offer the best start-ups – in the fields of IT, telco, big data, e-commerce, e-health, media and clean tech. and life science – the opportunity to accelerate their businesses in a one week business acceleration program is Silicon Valley.

This year, 208 diverse applications from 87-percent male founders and 13-percent female founders were submitted for the 2016 batch. Nearly 50-percent emanate from IT/web/software, 13-percent from Fintech, 14-percent from Hardware and other categories consist 18 founders that develop services and software for e-commerce, ten cases in ads technology, and a couple of applications in big data, e-health, smart home and security. Geographically, 90-percent of the applications come from Switzerland out of which 2/3 of them are from the German-speaking part with a strong focus on Zurich around 7-percent from the rest of Europe and 3-percent from all over the world.

In a next phase, the applications will be reviewed by an internal jury of innovation managers and product owners from all areas of Swisscom to select the 10 finalists that will be announced at the beginning of July.

The nominated 10 will be invited to pitch before the Jury and only 5 will be proclaimed winners of the 2016 challenge. As reward they will travel to Silicon Valley in September in order to gain a deeper understanding of their businesses in a global context as well as identify and tackle their most pressing issues such as seeking potential customers, exploring their chances for a venture investment or meeting with industry experts in their respective fields.
