Caulys Modules at EPFL

Following one year of R&D, the Renens based Caulys SA has launched the first modules of its vertical indoor farms at the EPFL Campus. The solution will help address environmental and societal needs brought about the rising global population.

During their research, Grégoire Gentile and Tom Lachkar developed Caulys, an automated and sustainable vertical greenhouse to encourage indoor farming in urban areas. Whether in company offices, cafeterias, homes, restaurants the modules are designed to fit any space. In addition to being environmentally friendly, the modules use 95% less of water compared to conventional farming, thanks to an integrated circuit. As such, the Farms help to grow up to 200 microgreens and herbs according to the users’ needs. The solution is

The startup team has now launched a pilot project at the EPFL Campus, installing 18 Caulys Modules, growing 900 plants simultaneously in the cafeteria of the EPFL premises. Through the project the startup team, together with the supporting partners, will grow food to test the solution. This project is part of a bigger project of collaboration with various actors including the EPFL Sustainability, the Masters programs, EPFL Innovation Park and the labs.

“This installation was made possible thanks to Durabilité EPFL, and more particularly through their program Act For Change Lab, supporting sustainable projects at EPFL. The aim of EPFL+Caulys installation is to bring on campus a food sustainable production, thanks to our automated greenhouses. We hope it will last as long as possible, to provide quality produce in quantity all year long, with a lower carbon and environmental footprint”, says Gentile Grégoire, CEO and Co-founder of Caulys.

According to Gentile, the startup is working on a new version of their product which will be installed in office and co-working spaces. Upon the success and completion of the project, the startup will officially launch the solution in the market and begin shipping as of 2020. Pre-orders are being accepted for the first shipment.

“The EPFL installation is a very important milestone for us. This is the first time Caulys -Farm is shown to the public after a year of product development. Having our solution in the heart of EPFL campus will show that we can combine technology and nature to offer a bright new food production and consumption model”, acknowledges Grégoire.
