On Friday Uepaa! has launched its mountain rescue app. The weekend following the placement of the app it rocketed to No.2 in the Swiss App Store and is now trailing What’s App. The number of downloads will remain high. Several partners such as Mammut are supporting Uepaa! with the commercialization of this innovative product.

The startup Uepaa has developed a security service for people who spend their leisure time outdoors and are keen mountaineers. After a year of development, extensive testing, even more coffee and a helicopter flight search, the app is now available.

With the Uepaa! app anyone can immediately benefit from being directly connected to Uepaa!’s 24/7 emergency call center. If you don’t have mobile network coverage, the alarm will search its way through to other smart phones in the area. This is made possible by what is known as peer-to-peer technology, which connects the smart phones of all Uepaa users and rescue teams to an ad-hoc network. Thanks to the so-called “Grüezi”principle, Uepaa users share their hiking location automatically with other users. Thus both person and position information can come from areas without mobile network coverage. Uepaa! can then alert the professional rescue teams earlier and faster. The professional rescue teams use a similar app, allowing them to track the signal of injured or missing people (from the air and from the ground).

New features will follow in the autumn, such as automatic accident detection, buddy aid and remote tracking. These features will transform the smartphone into a guardian angel getting the user help when he or she is no longer capable of pressing the button. From the beginning of September, the app will also be available internationally.

Mammut is supporting Uepaa! with the commercialization of this exciting product. The Mammut Sports Group supports the initiative of improving safety in the mountains and is helping Uepaa! with the commercialization of this new product.

With Uepaa AG, Swisscom and other partners are extending the capabilities of today’s smartphones and phone networks, as well as standard alpine safety products.

Michael Gysler, member of the management committee of Mammut Sports Group explains: «For us as a mountaineering brand, the safety of outdoor enthusiasts comes first. We are convinced that this new app from Uepaa! can contribute to making the alpine area safer with smartphones. Therefore, we are very excited about today's market entry of Uepaa AG and supporting this young company in further developing the topic of “safety in the mountains”, hand in hand.»

Mathias Haussmann, CEO and founder of Uepaa AG explains: «We are also very proud of currently having Mammut as a Uepaa! partner. Our shared interest in the subject of alpine safety is great and we have also identified common ground from a technical perspective - which the users should be excited about»
