Swiss startup WeGaw and hydrology specialist, Hydrique Ingénieurs have joined forces. They will leverage their expertise to combine observed satellite-based snow information with precise hydrological modelling capabilities to enable more sustainable and profitable hydropower generation and trading.

Through its flagship product, DeFROST, WeGaw offers satellite data for daily snow monitoring. The startup leverages machine learning algorithms and satellite imagery from ESA and NASA constellations to process space-data and extract critical features such as snow extent and depth based on earth observation data. Its product DeFROST provides accurate information on in near-real-time. WeGaw’s solution also enables energy companies to optimise their generation and trading to create a more sustainable and clean energy production.

WeGaw has now entered a partnership with Hydrique Ingénieurs, a Lausanne-based company specialising in hydraulics, hydrology, real-time information systems and river basin management. The partnership allows Hydrique Ingénieurs to use DeFROST to increase the accuracy of seasonal inflow forecasting by producing observable Snow-Water-Equivalent (SWE), one of two key variables to forecast the volume of available water for hydropower generation in snow-prone areas. The new solution will replace modelled data with real-life information proving better data to Swiss hydropower providers.

The joint solution aims to reduce errors in seasonal inflow forecasts by up to 20%, thus increasing energy efficiency by optimising existing production and making hydropower a more profitable option while ensuring sustainable use of water resources. The technology will be aligned with the Swiss Energy Strategy 2050 and the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development as defined by members of the United Nations and the Swiss Federal Council.

The partners are currently applying for a Swiss national research programme to pilot their solution in collaboration with the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF. They are searching for hydropower companies interested in joining the consortium.
