Following the strategic partnership with Takeda, Idun Technologies has won Austrian hearing training experts Everlisten GmbH to co-create a neuro-enhanced hearing training solution. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to enter the hearing health market and to build the future of listening.

IDUN Technologies has built a neuro-intelligence platform where brain waves can be recorded continuously from the ear canal. The platform translates brain signals into actionable insights using signal processing and machine learning algorithms. These insights are provided to partners through an IDUN API. Based on those insights, partners can personalize their products and services. In May this year, the startup launched its first product, the DRYODE™ Guardian, the first brain-sensing in-ear Hearable worldwide and won Takeda to build health and well-being applications based on individual mental states.

The new partner Everlisten GmbH aims to tackle the devastating effects of hearing loss. The company is building a digital platform where people with hearing disabilities can train their hearing capabilities with a personalized and intuitive app. Auditory training is a highly promising field for people suffering from hearing impairments. Scientific literature indicates that additional auditory training besides using hearing aids can influence auditory plasticity and reorganize the brain to improve hearing functionality.

The first step of the collaboration is to quantify the efficacy of the hearing training with in-ear brain monitoring with the overall goal to personalize the training sessions to a user’s individual brain responses. With a neuroscientific concept called auditory steady-state response (ASSR) it is possible to detect the neurological reaction of the brain to an audio stimulus. These ASSR tests can be used to create an audiogram to answer questions on hearing capabilities, hearing loss and aural rehabilitation.

“Hearing health is a fascinating market segment for us. We think that our collaboration can help to destigmatize hearing care and allow us to validate our neuro-intelligence platform with hearing use cases. A successful collaboration could lead to a plethora of neuro-enhanced audio products,” says Séverine Gisin, Co-founder and CCO of IDUN Technologies.

Over 700 people anticipated to lose hearing ability
Hearing loss is a significant problem with over 5% of the world’s population or 430 million people – requiring rehabilitation to address their ‘disabling’ hearing loss. By 2050 estimates indicate that over 700 million people will have disabling hearing loss. Approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing. Meanwhile, hearing aids are often associated with a negative stigma, making people believe they would appear older, weaker, or less capable. However, when hearing loss is left untreated, it will not only persist but may also lead to cognitive decline, social disengagement, and a variety of serious health issues.
