H55, a Valais based startup specialising in electric propulsion, has closed a first financing round with Nanodimension, a Silicon Valley based VC firm. The funds will facilitate the further development of H55’s electric propulsion technology for the aviation industry.

H55’s aEro1 is a technological legacy of Solar Impulse and the first airplane to fly day and night with unlimited endurance. Based on a certified electric propulsion technology, aEro 1 was designed to make air transport clean, safe, quiet, affordable and ultimately autonomous. H55 focuses on the entire propulsion chain starting from the energy source and its management, right through thrust and power, as well as pilot interface and all control systems.

André Borschberg, co-founder and CEO of H55 and former pilot of Solar Impulse, together with his co-founder Bertrand Piccard, the initiator of Solar Impulse have continued to gather experience in the field whilst simultaneously improving their electric aviation solutions. At launch, H55‘s electric aerobatic aircraft, aEro1 had flown more than 50 hours with a battery endurance exceeding more than 1 hour. To-date, the two cofounders and colleagues from solar impulse have additionally flown more than 1200 hours electric with the 2 solar impulse airplanes.

“Fifteen years ago when we started Solar Impulse with my partner Bertrand Piccard, we were told that electric propulsion for airplanes was anecdotal and had no future. It is now clear that electric propulsion will revolutionize aviation by making completely new airplane designs possible. What is science fiction today will be the reality of tomorrow.”

With the raised funds from Nanodimension, H55 seeks to further develop their technology and bring new products for the aviation industry.
