Bottmedical Aligners

Founded 2019 as a spin-off from the University of Basel, Bottmedical is developing patent-protected teeth aligners based on next-generation natural materials. The startup has recently now raised seed funds from private international investors to finalize the Minimal Viable product of its first product.

Transparent and removable plastic aligners have been in the market for several years; however, holding a plastic appliance in the mouth could trigger earnest health issues caused by the ingestion of microplastics into the patient’s body, due to continual abrasion of the clear-aligner rail. The related health risks are so far unknown and thus unpredictable.

Based on the founders' more than six years of experience in nanotechnology and 20 years of business experience in life science, the Basel based Bottmedical is developing new medical devices - NaturAligner and ToFI Trainer - based on its thin-film polymer technology.

With NaturAligner, Bottmedical aims to replace plastic used in orthodontic devices for teeth straightening with next-generation, bio-based materials. The biocompatible material on NaturAligner allows for a high level of comfort, providing a gentle fit and skin-like surface. In addition, the natural saliva storage in the bio-based polymers reduces the risk of dry teeth and thus, the risk of caries. The market entry is envisioned subsequently to the multicenter clinical study in Q4/2020.

BottMedical has recently closed the first financing round raising an undisclosed amount from private international investors. The company will use the newly secured seed capital for the fabrication of the minimum viable product for NaturAligner until Q4/2020.

Innosuisse project to address snoring and sleep apnea
Bottmedical's second medical device is
TOFI Trainer developed as an innosuisse project scheduled to kick off in April 2020.  Bottmedical, in collaboration with several academic partners, will develop a tongue-machine interface, which is sensitive to the tongue’s position and force to enable gamified training therapy for snoring and sleep apnea patients. The myofunctional motor skills training with TOFI will significantly increase the strength and subconscious control of the tongue at night, which will prevent, alleviate or adequately treat chronic snoring and light sleep apnea in millions of patients around the world.
