Belgian billionaire Marc Couke invests in Sophia Genetics

According to several Belgian newspapers, Marc Coucke has invested in Sophia Genetics. Coucke founded Omega Pharma, one of the leading OTC healthcare companies, in 1987. Omega was sold to Perrigo for €3.8 billion in March 2015.

Several Belgian newspapers reported yesterday about new investments of Marc Coucke. Coucke has invested €75 million in several organisations and companies active in the field of cancer prevention, diagnosis and therapy trough his investment company Alychlo. Sophia Genetics is one of those companies.

Coucke, born in 1965, founded Omega Pharma NV in 1987 with two Belgian pharmacists. Under his leadership, the company grew and expanded geographically into a world player of consumer health care products, with affiliates in 36 countries. Omega generated approximately €1.27 billion of revenue and €200 million of operating cash flow in the year ended December 31, 2014.

Coucke served as Omega Pharma NV’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until the company was acquired by Perrigo in March 2015. Perrigo Company plc, a leading global provider of "Quality Affordable Healthcare Products, announced in March that it has completed the acquisition of Omega in a cash and equity transaction valued at approximately €3.8 billion.

Sophia Genetics is helping clinicians, physicians and oncologists improve the prediction and care paths of genetic diseases, while complying with European data privacy. The company, based in Western Switzerland, does this by simplifying the use of Data Driven Medicine by providing a series of securely hosted Software as a Service (SaaS) modules covering the bioinformatic analysis protocol, the validation and quality control process, the presentation of results of genetic tests to clinicians, and the protection of patient DNA sequence data through safe storage and sharing.
