The existing technology to detect art forgery is complex and expensive. Lausanne-based MATIS develops a multispectral camera and an image-processing algorithm that is easy to use and allows a faster and easier interpretation of the hidden information from painting than existing methods. MATIS will use the CHF 150,000 from Venture Kick to accelerate product development.

When art experts authenticate a painting, they usually have to hire technical experts who perform a scientific analysis, which is costly and slows down processes. Often, the piece of art must be sent to an external laboratory, which leads to additional costs and increases the risk of damages.

MATIS provides an intuitive and affordable solution to advance art authentication. The Lausanne-based startup develops a multispectral camera that is connected to an image processing software: The machine-learning technology examines the scattering, diffusion, and penetration of different lights in pain layers, which allow art experts to access valuable information to authenticate paintings. MATIS’s innovative camera is less expensive and offers a higher accuracy than existing technology. Because the camera and software are easy to use, MATIS allows art experts to perform authentications without hiring costly third-party experts or engineers.

The team behind MATIS includes Dr. Marie Didier (CEO, with a dual background in optics and art, holding a PhD in Optics from EPFL, having 10 years of experience in conservation science, working at CSEM), Dr. Dylan Cotta (CTO, Ecole Normale Supérieure graduate and former research fellow at Harvard University and MIT), Rainier Brunet-Guilly (entrepreneur, expert in financial strategy and fundraising, director of the 2022 French presidential fundraising campaign), and Triana Temer (art historian and researcher, project and artists manager).

The startup will use this Venture Kick capital to accelerate the product development and equip its first clients with the MATIS solution. MATIS CEO Marie Didier explained: “Venture Kick is a must when diving into the startup adventure. It makes you doubt, believe, and grow. It is a thrilling and challenging experience―exactly like the entrepreneurial journey. It gives you the framework to launch and mature your idea and meet skilled people that can help you. I recommend this experience!”
