According to an article published today by Le Temps, Bestmile has initiated mass layoff proceedings two weeks ago and just filed for bankruptcy. Deeply affected by the global pandemic, the Lausanne based mobility pioneer was forced to cease its activities.

Cofounded in January 2014 by Raphael Gindraz and Anne Mellano, EPFL spin-off Bestmile pioneered a fleet orchestration platform which enables mobility providers to design, deploy, and optimize autonomous and human-driven mobility services.

Thanks to its vision, the Vaud based scale-up won multiple awards such as Techcrunch Digital50 Best B2B Startup in 2019, closed significant international fundraising rounds with investors including Airbus Ventures, Partech and Serena and worked lately on urban mobility projects in Fribourg, Lausanne, Sion and Geneva. The company had also signed contracts abroad for example in Belgium, France, the Czech Republic and the USA.

Hard hit by the pandemic, the company specializing in autonomous vehicles has just laid off all its 45 employees, putting an abrupt end to a project that inspired many Swiss entrepreneurs. More info can be read in an article by Le Temps.

On a positive note the story illustrates that founders of Swiss start-ups are taking higher risks than ten years ago – a development moving the ecosystem forward. These higher risks shall lead to higher growth but can of course also result in closing of the company.
