The accelerator program Samsung for Impact supports impact start-ups that are tackling the challenges of the ageing society. In Switzerland, the selection jury nominated five start-ups which will benefit from the 12-week program.

Samsung For Impact Switzerland acceleration program supports promising impact start-ups and entrepreneurs to stimulate sustainable innovation in the fields of health and well being of the ageing society. The 12-week program provides start-ups with a platform and community for solving large and complex challenges. At the end of the program, participants will have the chance to pitch their solution in front of their peers, impact investors and Samsung representatives.

Among the selected Swiss start-ups is PIPRA AG (short form of Pre-Interventional Preventive Risk Assessment) which was founded in 2019 by John Klepper, Nayeli Schmutz and Benjamin Dodsworth. The start-up developed an Artificial Intelligence-based preoperative risk assessment tool for objectively determining a patients risk of postoperative delirium. Postoperative delirium in the elderly has a 25% mortality rate within one month, doubles nursing home admissions and in 38% of cases leads to long-term dementia. Identifying high-risk patients before surgery enables doctors to prevent the incidence from occurring, thereby increasing the lifespan of the elderly. PIPRA helps clinicians pre-surgically evaluate a patient’s risk using unbiased, data-driven scores calculated from risk factors, allowing for protective perioperative measures.

Four months following its incorporation, PIPRA obtained €2 million after winning the “EIT Health Wild Card” program which provides access to EIT Health business mentors who will contribute to the scientific and commercial advancement of PIPRA in preparation for the launch in 2021.

Further start-ups in the Samsung for Impact program are

Emovo Care – a medical device robotic hand orthosis for stroke victims based on artificial tendon technology. The system enables patients to bring care directly at home, reducing costs and secondary complications due to limited healthcare coverage.

P2 Solutions – developed intelligent diapers for elderly care centres to accurately calculate when diapers are full, which helps to prevent leakages and bedsores of the elderly as well as to simplify the work of caregivers.

We+Care – is an integrated Swiss care coordination platform for distance carers of older people. As four out of five 80-year-olds live at home and 70% of the care is provided by 600’000 informal carers, We+Care is tapping the untapped knowledge of carers and helps create the ‘optimal care’ solution by making informed decisions on how to set up and coordinate a cost-efficient care network. The swiss pilot project has recently received funding OF €1.5 million from the AAL Innovation Programme of the European Union.

Senopi AG - developed a proprietary platform enabling caregivers to control seniors’ VR experiences and is currently developing digital therapeutics to monitor and prevent age-related frailty and cognitive decline. It is a scalable solution for prolonging healthy lives and promoting seniors’ well-being.
