Swiss startup Insphero has received the Red Dot Award for its revolutionary new transport technology, InFloat, for shipping live 3D cell culture models to laboratories worldwide. The startup celebrates along with companies such as Apple, Lenovo, Phillips, Logitech and Bose.

The Red Dot Award recognises outstanding design achievements of designers and companies worldwide in roughly 50 categories based on criteria for excellent design standards and innovation. With more than 18,000 entries, the RedDot Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions, which has been the revered international seal of outstanding design quality. In addition to trophies and certificates, the winning projects will be exhibited online in museums and presented in the Red Dot Design Yearbook 2020/2021.

This year 6,992 projects from designers, agencies and companies from 50 countries entered the competition and following the assessment, the Jury awarded the Red Dot Award to 854 of the brands and communication works, and the Red Dot: Best of the Best for very high design quality to 55 entries. Among them are brands from renowned global companies such as Apple, LG, Lenovo, Bose Corporation, WMF and Sony Imaging Products and Solutions.

Schlieren based InSphero, pioneer of 3D cell-based assay technology is also among the Red Dot Best of the Best award for product design in the category of industrial equipment, and automation for its InFloat Shipping Technology. “This system for the shipping of living microtissues is characterised by its perfectly aligned functionality,“ according to a statement from the 2020 Red Dot Jury assigned to evaluate the InFloat Microtissue Shipping System.

The InFloat shipping system ensures that plates of assay-ready 3D InSight microtissues not only remain upright, but also secure and at physiological temperatures suitable for live cell cultures during domestic and international transit to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic laboratories worldwide, for drug efficacy and safety testing. This unique packaging solution employs a simple and ingenious approach, in which a watertight spherical container holding plates of microtissues, floats on water inside a cubical container and can freely rotate. The precious microtissue cargo inside always remains in a stable, upright position even if the exterior box is turned and flipped upside down during transit.

“We are honoured to receive this Red Dot: Best-of-the-Best award,” says InSphero Head of Platforms and Technology Olivier Frey, who led the InFloat design effort. “It’s a testament to the creative, out-of-the-box thinking of our engineering and logistics team as well as the experience of our packaging production partner, Taracell AG.”

The InFloat™ Shipping System will be on display at the Red Dot Museum in Essen, Germany, through May 31, 2021.
