The Geneva based Proton Technologies providing encrypted email and VPN services now offers safe browsing services in 21 countries. Today, the company has installed its first four VPN servers in Johannesburg, South Africa.

According to the recent assessment of internet censorship by Freedom House, South Africa has the most Internet freedom of any country in sub-Saharan Africa. For this reason, ProtonVPN is expanding its services to the continent with new servers in Johannesburg.

The newly installed VPN servers offer South Africans stronger security, speed and access to various sources. For South Africans traveling outside of the Rainbow Nation, the servers will allow them to keep up with all the latest geo-restricted content on South African websites.

Like its existing VPN servers, the new servers are optimized for streaming, making them ideal for streaming Hulu, HBO GO, ZDF, Channel 4, and Channel 5. Neighbouring countries with less freedom will also benefit from the services.

Furthermore, the South Africa VPN servers are part of Proton’s special network dedicated to peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. Existing users with a paid account can now connect to the South African servers for secure and fast file sharing with their friends.
