A pioneer of secure cloud storage, Wuala founded by Dominik Grolimund and Luzius Meisser, announced today that it is closing its service after 7 years. Wuala recommends the company Tresorit to their users to keep their files safe after Wuala shuts down. Tresorit is a young company with strong ties to Switzerland.

Since yesterday Wuala users are no longer able to purchase storage or renew existing accounts.  Full account service will continue through 30 September 2015, at which point all active accounts will shift to read-only mode.  Effective Sunday, 15 November 2015, the Wuala cloud service will terminate.

Wuala has been founded by the Swiss entrepeneurs Dominik Grolimund and Luzius Meisser. In 2009 they sold their company to LaCie – part of the Seagate Technology Group.

In order to ease the impact of the Wuala service termination, Wuala has partnered with Tresorit—a provider of end-to-end encrypted cloud storage for businesses and individuals—and created a secure, easy option to transition data to Tresorit.

“We are proud that Wuala recommends Tresorit to their users to keep their files safe after Wuala shuts down. Everyone in our team is prepared and committed to deliver an excellent service. We even developed a tool to help users migrate data securely from Wuala to Tresorit in collaboration with Wuala engineers”, writes Tresorit CEO István Lám in a blogpost.

Tresorit has ties to Switzerland. István Lám who founded Tresorit in 2011 and is living in Hungary studied at the EPFL in Lausanne. Today the R&D department of the company is in Budapest, however Tresorit is registered in Switzerland where Andreas Kemi is based, President of the Board and investor.
