Following successful pilot tests of the Core body temperature wearable by greenTEG, Deceuninck – Quick-Step has decided to use the wearable throghout the 2021 season. The device will be used to further investigate the correlation between body temperature and endurance performance in elite athletes.

Deceuninck – Quick-Step is the most successful cycling team clearly leading the ranking of the UCI, the world governing body for sports cycling. Riders include world champion Julian Alaphilippe and Kaspar Asgreen who recently won the Tour of Flanders, on of the most important spring races.

The team have been trialing CORE’s unique systems since last year’s Giro d’Italia. After a successful trial period, the coaching team has decided to use CORE’s tools throughout the coming season, in order to study further the corelation between the body’s core temperature and elite endurance performance, while enhancing Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s reputation for embracing new technologies.

The
CORE Body Temperature sensor is the world’s first technology for continuous, non-invasive and accurate measurements during endurance performance. The patented miniaturised sensor is ideal for the integration into wearable and med-tech devices with skin contact. The developer, greenTEG, has embedded its sensor in a compact device called CORE, which when attached to heart rate monitor strap, provides live body temperature measurements (with an accuracy 0.21 degrees Celsius) and records the data directly to the cycling computer.

For athletes, the devices also comes in handy as it enables them to establish their thresholds and actively monitor core body temperature, in conjunction with their other metrics such as heart rate and power output. This improves training and allows for better strategic decision making during a competition.

Speaking of the new partnership with the Swiss company, Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s head coach Koen Pelgrim said: “When it was explained to us how the CORE body temperature technology works, we were of course interested. For several months now, we have been trialing their technology and looking at ways of measuring our riders core temperatures during training and racing, and then analysing the findings to help us understand how even slightly changes in core temperature can affect performance. We were impressed by CORE’s knowledge base and support, as well as their efforts to make a discreet unit like that, which helps especially important during races. We are looking forward to partnering with them this year and seeing the results.”

Deceuninck – Quick-Step is only one of the UCI World teams teams using CORE. Other teams include Bora Hansgrohe, Astana and Qubeka Assos. In addition successful triathletes such as olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and Ronnie Schildknecht are use the device.
