Significant progress has been achieved by Swiss coalition in Neuchâtel to find a highly hydrophobic coating for a huge variety of commercially available fabrics for mask fabrication. The coating can help to make hydrophilic fabrics like paper strongly hydrophobic comparable to surgical or FFP2/FFP3 masks. Supported by Swiss startup Coat-X, the consortium is looking for textile industry companies to launch the production of the masks.

A few weeks ago, a team of Swiss scientists and engineers at Coat-X, INVENesis and R&D department of Philip Morris International joined forces to find solutions for the global shortage of protective masks against the coronavirus based on available fabrics. Recently the consortium has made significant progress in the development of a highly hydrophobic coating for a huge variety of commercially available fabrics for masks. The performance of the coating is now being tested by the University of Neuchâtel, the University of Geneva and the Swiss research and technology organization CSEM.

Contacted by Startupticker.ch, Coat-X CEO Andreas Hogg explains the growing coalition is set on a very clear goal: to treat widely available fabrics so that they can be used easily to make surgical-type masks in large numbers. Today the team led by the Managing Director of INVENsis Jean-Luc Perret, is looking for companies active in the textile industry interested to take on the production in our country.

Given the circumstances, the Swiss coalition based in Neuchâtel has worked at a remarkable pace thanks to its expertise. As Andreas Hogg further explains, this progress opens up the prospect of a large scale production of surgical-type masks in Switzerland and Neuchâtel if tailoring / textile industry partners are found quickly.
