Startups must meet Red Herring’s 20 criteria points to win the award. Two Swiss technologies impressed the jury most: the first laser-based bone cutting device and oral therapy for chronic diseases.

Every year, startups from all over Europe submit their applications for the Red Herrings award, which recognises the most innovative and promising technologies. This year, the Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluated the companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technological innovation, management quality, business strategy, and market penetration.

“We had the toughest time in years because so many entrepreneurs had crossed significant milestones so early in the European tech ecosystem. Nevertheless, after much thought, rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across Europe to the Top 100 Winners,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring.

More than 250 C-level technology entrepreneurs, corporate strategists, and investors from across Europe gathered in Amsterdam to celebrate the 2018 winners. Among them are two innovations from Switzerland.

Advanced Osteotomy Tools AG (AOT) – the Basel based medtech startup developed Carlo (Cold Ablation Robot-guided Laser Osteotome), the world’s first device that cuts bone and hard tissue with a laser. CARLO combines new laser technology with a lightweight, tactile robot and complex 3D planning and control software into a relatively small and ergonomic system that integrates well into the surgical workplace. The startup has already closed a series C round

BioLingus – is a biotech company spearheading the development of oral and mucosal delivery of peptides and proteins. The startup developed a technology that takes injectable medicines and transforms them into pills that go under the tongue. Biolingus’ technology is internationally patent protected. The startup has its main office in  Hergiswil (NW) and offices in Hong Kong and Australia.
