Lateshift in cinema

The Swiss-based company, known for its movie “Late Shift”, developed a groundbreaking technology that allows the audience to decide the storyline of a movie. This time, the investors have decided: Aviron Capital, backed by the world's largest asset manager, wants to expand the CtrlMovie’s technology.

CtrlMovie is a patented ground-breaking technology that enables filmmakers to create interactive movies of cinematic quality for mobile devices, interactive theatrical screenings and home entertainment. With the CtrlMovie app, audiences can influence the storyline of a movie without affecting the onscreen action. They can decide, on behalf of the protagonist, what characters will do at pivotal points in the narrative, thereby giving the film different plots. The ending and running times of the film depend on the audience’s choices.

Last year, the company released, Lateshift, its first full-length production movie containing 14 possible storylines and more than 180 decision points leading up to one of seven potential endings. LateShiftt was co-written and directed by Tobias Weber, co.-CEO and founding partner of CtrlMovie.

In 2017, Weber teamed up with Silvatar Media LLC, a Hollywood-based entertainment company, to found Kino Industries. CtrlMovie, based in Altishofen, Luzern, and Silvatar became subsidiaries of the new formed entity. This week, a Beverly Hills asset management company, Aviron Capital has invested an undisclosed amount in Kino Industries. Aviron Capital is financed by BlackRock, the world's largest wealth management company with over $6 trillion under management.

Aviron Capital will manage the capital structure of Kino Industries, including evaluating the merits of expanding the investment pool to include other strategic partners such as content creators, global distributors and digital marketing companies. Aviron will also finance the deployment and installation of CtrlMovie-compatible equipment in movie theaters to prime the market for the launch and continued exhibition of films utilizing the CtrlMovie technology.

“What struck us about CtrlMovie – beyond the innovation and elegant flow of the experience – is that it has the potential to introduce younger audiences to the movie-going experience and bring them back to the theater. Rather than shunning the use of mobile devices in theaters, their phones can be valuable tools to actively enjoy a communal event, in real life, together”, said Aviron Capital Chairman William Sadleir.
