venture leaders

Last Thursday the venture leaders teams for Boston and New York pitched at venturelab's Startup Champions Event in Lausanne. The event was followed by the EPFL Alumni Seed Night with the award ceremony of the Prix Isabelle Musy.

The twenty venture leaders had been announced three weeks ago. For the first time two teams will travel to the US. Ten ICT companies will spent a week in New York. Ten life sciences start-ups will travel to Boston. New York as a new destination was well received by the ICT entrepreneurs. “For Prodibi New York as a hotspot for media and fashion the place to be”, said Prodibi CEO and co-founder Olivier Hamel.

During the event two captains were elected. Captain of the ICT team is Michela Puddu, co-founder and CEO at Haelixa. She is co-inventor of Haelixa technology with a background as Materials scientist, Michela earned her PhD in Chemical Engineering at ETH Zurich. She has been later awarded the Pioneer Fellowship from ETH in order to convert Haelixa technology into a business. Haelixa provides intelligent DNA-based tracing solutions allowing fluid/item tracking and parameter monitoring of temperature, light, pH, oxidants to support the energy industry and ensure product authentication, quality control and liability management.

Captain of the Life Sciences team is Andrea Maesani, co-founder and CEO of Intento. He holds a PhD in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences from EPFL. During his studies, he worked on artificial intelligence methods, computational neuroscience and evolutionary robotics. In parallel to his studies, he collaborated on developing technologies for stroke rehab. Intento is developing a wearable solution for the rehabilitation of paralyzed stroke patients.

250 participants at the EPFL Alumni Seed Night
Each year the EPFL Alumni Seed Night gathers several hundreds of Alumni. This year 250 angel investors, mentors, industry leaders and scientists joined the event. 15 start-ups had the chance to pitch to them or the present their company at a booth. It was interesting to see which start-ups were selected by the audience for the second round of pitching. The selected start-ups were: Insolight, Qloudlab, Sensars, bNovate and Technis.

One highlight of the event was the award ceremony of the Prix Isabelle Musy. The award went to Sandra Sulser, founder of BioMe. Biome is developing a novel platform to create health-promoting microbiome communities to replace the patient’s misbalanced intestinal flora. Read more about Sandra Sulser in our separate article.
