Solar powered batteries

The Federal Office for the Environment, FOEN granted another loan guarantee to an innovative Swiss SME: Ampard. The start-up aggregates solar storage systems to virtual power plants aiming to stabilize the grid.

Ampard develops an energy management system that increases the share of self-produced electricity in single- and multi-family houses, which already use photovoltaic systems and battery storage devices. Furthermore, the energy management system AMPARD aggregates solar storage systems to a virtual power plant. These decentralized storage systems can help to stabilize the grid in storing excess grid power temporarily. Selling unused battery capacity to the frequency regulation markets means additional revenues for battery owners and accelerates the further expansion of renewable energies in a decentralized energy supply system.

Simon Summermatter, CEO of Ampard Ltd., appreciates the support granted by the Technology Fund: „We are experiencing great demand for AMPARD and are about to increase market development activities in Switzerland, Germany and Benelux region. The loan guarantee helps to back this important investments.”

Simone Riedel Riley, Managing Director of the Technology Fund as well is optimistic about the future success of Ampard Ltd.: „An impressive amount of battery storage systems has already been installed and aggregated. Since April, aggregated small storage systems with less than 10kW power are already generating revenues on the frequency regulation markets – a pioneering achievement in Europe. In addition, important energy provider in Switzerland and Germany have been won as distribution partner and will support sales growth remarkably.”

Innovative SMEs, which are developing and marketing climate friendly technologies, can apply for a loan guarantee of up to CHF 3 million from the Technology Fund. The application form is available online at www.technologyfund.ch.
