Startups and SMEs with sustainable solutions for water and sanitation are invited to apply for the Swiss Bluetec Bridge program. The program is designed to help them to improve their technology and business model. Selected projects will receive an interest free loan of max. CHF 250,000.

The Swiss Bluetec Bridge initiative aims to sustainably improve access to clean water and sanitation for low-income people in rural areas and small cities in developing and newly industrialized countries.

Last year the funding was bestowed on Sterilux, a startup that developed "Steribox" for sterilizing medical instruments using 1000 times less water and 100 times less electricity compared to conventional sterilizers. This year again Swiss Bluetech Bridge invites startups to submit their applications until 30 August.

Sought for are innovative technologies, processes and business models aimed at:

  • Purifying water for human consumption
  • Providing drinking water (extract, ship, store, etc.) and ensuring more sustainable and equitable delivery of water supply services
  • Making water use more efficient (human consumption, irrigation, small industries, energy generation, and other uses)
  • Preserving water quality (wastewater & sludge treatment at household or community level, other interventions intending to protect and preserve water in the immediate environment or in the related watershed)

The ideas will be selected based on the criteria of: market opportunity, sustainability & scale-up, product and service, entrepreneurship and governance, and impact.

The most outstanding startup will receive a non-refundable loan of up to 250,000 Swiss francs covering up to 50% of the project cost. They will also get technical and managerial support from the Swiss Bluetec Bridge team, and will also be exposed to a broad network of experts and like-minded people. This is to enable them realize their plans and thus acquire the necessary know-how to expand their business activities in the target regions and to reach private financing in the medium term.

Eligible to apply are start-ups registered in Switzerland, SMEs and social entrepreneurs. Swiss associations and foundations may also submit applications. However, the latter have to prove their entrepreneurial vision and market strategy (commercial orientation / goal) as well as the possible leverage of support for the Swiss Bluetec Bridge.
