Cytosurge in collaboration with ETH Zurich has developed a new method for single cell analysis based on FluidFM. The method adds another chapter in the application scope of FluidFM technology.

The new method, based on FluidFM technology, enables penetration of single living cells and extraction content for further analysis. Individual singe cells can further be analysed using well established analysis methods. The newly developed method allows scientists to investigate the behaviour of individual cells within their natural environment without changing their cellular content. The FluidFM-based method has opened a new dimension for biologist to study single cells. With it, it is unnecessary to separate and physically remove single cells from their native environment hence allowing scientists to take any desired samples of individual cells that can be repeatedly applied to the same cell without affecting the entire cellular content. This way scientist can discover the differences between individual cells within a population at a molecular level.

Julia Vorholt, a professor at the Department of Biology at ETH Zurich comments: “Our method opens up new frontiers in biological research. It is the start of a whole new chapter”, Vorholt is leading the research group that developed the new method.

Orane Guillaume-Gentil, postdoc in Professor from Vorholt’s research group is says: “We can now study how a cell affects its neighbouring cells. Thanks to the new FluidFM based extraction of single cells it is also possible to conduct single cell analysis studies while preserving the entire cellular context with respect to space and time.”

Pascal Behr, CEO of Cytosurge comments: “Professor Vorholt and her research group made a phenomenal effort by developing this new method for the extraction of individual cells. This brings an entirely new chapter to FluidFM and allows us to further strengthen our value proposition to our customers. With the addition of this new method, FluidFM technology is transforming into a true platform technology. We can now offer solutions ranging from biophysical investigations to micro 3D printing of metals as well as comprehensive single cell analysis.”
