The six winners of the Innovation World Cup 2017 have been announced. Among them is Swiss startup Gait Up, awarded for their product Pomocup. Pomocup is the world’s first wearable delivering real-time performance metrics for ski mountaineering.

The WT Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup is the leading worldwide innovation competition awarding the most outstanding Wearable Technologies. This year 29 start-ups were nominated out of submission pool of over 400 entries received from all over the world. Among the finalists were three Swiss startups NEXO Group SA, Xsensio and Gait Up.

After each candidate had pitched to the audience, six winners were determined from each of the six categories: Sports and Fitness, Healthcare and Wellness, Safety and Security, Gaming and Lifestyle, as well as the two special prizes Smart Clothing and Smart Jewelry.

The winner in Sports and Fitness is Pomocup by Gait Up . Pomocup was developed following the partnership between leading ski touring company Pomoca and wearable motion analysis specialist Gait Up. Pomocup is the first smart device for ski tourers. The device is placed with a secure magnet on the ski to measures ski touring data such as time of the tour, altitude, speed, glide, grip, leg symmetry. Thanks to the integrated sensors, the each measurement is interpreted and delivered to the user with real-time feedback allowing them to improve their ski techniques and performance. Synchronisation with the users smartphone or smartwatch allows them to view and share their transition times and performance metrics. After the tour, performance is analysed in greater detail via the Skilog web interface.

Gait Up with a wealth of experience in motion analysis
Established a spin-off of the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV) and the Swiss Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) in 2013, Gait Up strives to stay at the forefront of innovation with advanced wearable technologies. The Gait Up founders have started working on motion analysis 15 years ago. Driven by medical applications, the technology created by the startup is the most advanced of its kind. Over the years, the software has evolved to include sports applications like swimming and running. In 2014, Gait Up joined hands with Pomoca to bring motion analysis to ski touring, hence the development of Pomocup.
